 The Jain community will deeply mourn the loss of this visionary ascetic who ordained over 50 monks, established innumerable institutions selflessly serving the marginalized across India and tirelessly toured overseas to nurture emerging Jain congregations globally. Truly the end of an epoch, but Acharya Vidyasagar Maharaj's teachings on ethical living and spiritual wisdom shall continue inspiring seekers worldwide towards the path of enlightenment shown by the venerable Tirthankars since antiquity. Background and Early Life

Acharya Shri VidyaSagar Ji Maharaj was born as Vidyadhar in 1946 on Sharad Purnima (full moon night) in the holy month of Ashwin in Sadalaga town in the Belgaum district of North Karnataka. His family were traditional Madhwa Brahmins.

 Vidyadhar’s father, Mallappa Dharmadikari and mother Shrimati later renounced worldly life in their old age to become the famed Jain monks - Muni Mallisagar Ji Maharaj and Aryika Samayamati Mata Ji respectively. From his parents, Vidyadhar imbibed deep spirituality in childhood.

 Even as a young boy, he displayed a contemplative disposition, inner poise and a maturity that astonished elders. He soon emerged as a scholar with diverse spiritual interests - being equally fluent in Sanskrit, Prakrit and Kannada alongside English and Hindi - capabilities that would pave the foundation for his dazzling multi-lingual oratory abilities later on.

The turning point in teenage Vidyadhar’s life came in 1963 when he met the legendary Jain Acharya Pujyashri Anandsagar Ji Maharaj in Dharwad during the latter’s Chaturmas spiritual retreat.
