Mobile will become portable TV, you will be able to watch videos without SIM and internet

To watch videos, movies or TV channels on mobile, both SIM card and internet are required, but now this will not happen.  In fact, 'direct-to-mobile' broadcasting may soon become a reality in the country.

In this, mobile users will be able to stream videos without SIM card or internet connection.

Addressing a broadcast conference, Information and Broadcasting Secretary Apoorva Chandra said domestic direct-to-mobile (D2M) technology will soon be tested in 19 cities and strongly advocated for reserving 470-582 MHz spectrum for this emerging technology.  Advocacy will be done.

 Pilot project started last year

Chandra said that shifting 25-30 percent of video traffic to D2M will reduce congestion on 5G networks, which will accelerate digital transformation in the country.  Last year, a pilot project to test the D2M technology was run in Bengaluru, Duty Path and Noida.

80 crore smartphones in the country

Chandra said the D2M technology will help reach about 8-9 crore 'TV dark' homes across the country.  Out of 28 crore households in the country, only 19 crore have television sets.  He said that there are 80 crore smartphones in the country and 69 percent of the content accessible to users is in video format.  Last year, pilot testing of D2M technology was conducted in Bengaluru, Duty Path and Noida.

Chandra said that due to heavy use of video, the mobile network gets blocked, due to which it starts playing intermittently.  D2M broadcasting technology developed by Sankhya Labs and Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kanpur uses terrestrial telecom infrastructure and spectrum assigned by a public broadcaster to transmit video, audio and data signals directly to compatible mobile and smart devices.
